Are baby classes worth it?

When you have a new baby, it can feel like there’s a class for everything - from Baby Sensory and Sing and Sign, to Hartbeeps, yoga and even baby Spanish.

But are baby classes really worth the time, effort and money?

The answer isn’t the same for everyone. Here’s an honest breakdown of the pros, cons and things to consider before booking.

The biggest factor: The class leader

I’ll be a bit controversial here: the best baby classes I went to weren’t necessarily because of the activity itself - but because of the leader.

A brilliant class leader, full of enthusiasm and energy, who genuinely connects with mums and babies, can make the whole experience amazing. Baby Sensory and Encantada (Spanish for babies/kids) were the highlights of our week for exactly that reason.

On the flip side, not all franchises or groups are equal. Sometimes you can tell when a leader is just going through the motions and it really does affect the vibe of the class.

Benefits of baby classes

So, what do you actually get out of going to baby classes?

  • Socialisation for your baby

Watching your little one interact with other babies is heart-melting and it’s a lovely way for them to explore beyond the toys you have at home.

  • Structure to your week

Having a class in the diary gives you something to look forward to and helps break up the week on maternity leave.

  • Friendships for mums

Book onto a block of classes and you’ll often see the same faces each week. The chats in between activities can easily grow into real friendships.

  • New experiences

Some classes bring activities, music, or props you’d never have at home, giving your baby new ways to explore the world.

The downsides

Of course, baby classes aren’t for everyone.

  • The stress of timings

Trying to get out of the house with a baby who naps unpredictably can be tough. I still remember spending most of a baby massage class rubbing lotion onto a doll because my daughter slept through the whole thing!

  • The cost

Let’s be honest, classes aren’t cheap. While they can be fun, you might not feel they’re worth the money if you’re on a budget.

  • Pressure to “do it all”

Some parents fill every day with a class, others prefer a slower routine. Both are absolutely fine.

Are Baby Classes Worth the Money?

Financially, classes are definitely an investment. Personally, I don’t think they sped up my babies’ development - but they were fun, positive, and gave us a lovely social experience and memories to last a lifetime. For me, that was worth it.

For many classes, you need to book a block of classes. If you’re unsure, trial sessions are brilliant. I once did a trial for a class I thought I’d love, only to come away disappointed. I didn’t return - and that was fine.

Final thoughts

Ultimately, whether baby classes are “worth it” comes down to what you want from them.

  • If you love the routine and social side - go for it.

  • If getting out feels stressful or it doesn’t fit your budget - that’s fine too.

There’s no right or wrong way to spend your maternity leave. The most important thing is enjoying time with your baby in whatever way works for you.
