At some point, we’ve all done it. You hear another mum celebrating what their little one has just learned to do and suddenly you’re wondering why your baby isn’t there yet. It’s so easy to compare and so understandable. We all want reassurance that our children are thriving.

But those moments can leave you questioning yourself. Am I doing enough? Should I be encouraging them more? Is my child falling behind? However, milestones are only guidance, not deadlines. No two children are the same. One baby might take a little longer to crawl but be quick with speech, another might master climbing before words. And some skills - like kindness, curiosity or creativity - don’t appear on any chart at all but are just as valuable.

Your child is not defined by a milestone. They are growing in their own way, at their own pace, and that’s exactly how it should be. Instead of comparing, celebrate the little achievements as they come and enjoy the journey with them.

If you have genuine concerns about their development consult healthcare professionals who can guide you and most likely reassure you.

So next time comparison creeps in, remind yourself: your baby’s path is their own, and it’s just as wonderful, valuable, and worth celebrating as anyone else’s.
